Your name
is
your identity but when it comes to your domain name, odds are the
name you want is already long gone. However, there are still
plenty of choices for meaningful domain names available for your online identity. Follow these tips:
- If
yourname.com is still available,
grab it now! Despite
all the new extensions (yourname.info, yourname.biz,
yourname.us), a .com extension is prime real estate!
- If
yourname.com is already taken, think of ways you can change it
slightly (ex: firstrealty, 1strealty, erafirstrealty,
floridafirstrealty, etc. - all of which are taken by the
way)
- Stick
with .com extension - your clients will! If you can
afford it now, you can also register yourname.net and any of
the other extensions but make your main identity .com
- Avoid names that may be
difficult for people to remember or spell - they may get lost
trying to find you or a typo can bring them to
someone else's web site.
A handy site for checking
the availability of domain names and variations is Domain
Fellow. It even includes a domain name
generator that uses keywords supplied by you. Should you
find a domain name you like, we do not recommend
that you register or purchase it from that site as, depending upon
who you select to host your site,
free domain name registration may be included in with a
hosting package.
Remember also, once you
have a domain name, your domain e-mail
address will never change, even if you change your ISP (internet
service provider). You can have multiple domain email accounts
(ex: dick@yourname.com, jane@yourname.com, spot@yourname.com,
sales@yourname.com, etc.) and you
can retrieve or have mail forwarded from your domain email
accounts just as easily as you do from your ISP account, perhaps
easier.
